Narrative:
Departing blm airport (uncontrolled) talking to mcguire approach on a remote transmitter. WX was MVFR, as indicated above. Received IFR release went back to unicom and transmitted while in position on runway 'departing runway 14.' just at rotation, a helicopter came over the center of the airport perpendicular to the runway. We altered course to the right to miss that aircraft. We heard no operations reports from the helicopter, though we were off unicom for a time. It seems an unsafe operation for helicopters to cross an active runway at low altitude, and seems wise to fly the recommended pattern at uncontrolled fields.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC AT A NON TWR ARPT.
Narrative: DEPARTING BLM ARPT (UNCTLED) TALKING TO MCGUIRE APCH ON A REMOTE XMITTER. WX WAS MVFR, AS INDICATED ABOVE. RECEIVED IFR RELEASE WENT BACK TO UNICOM AND TRANSMITTED WHILE IN POS ON RWY 'DEPARTING RWY 14.' JUST AT ROTATION, A HELI CAME OVER THE CTR OF THE ARPT PERPENDICULAR TO THE RWY. WE ALTERED COURSE TO THE R TO MISS THAT ACFT. WE HEARD NO OPS RPTS FROM THE HELI, THOUGH WE WERE OFF UNICOM FOR A TIME. IT SEEMS AN UNSAFE OP FOR HELIS TO CROSS AN ACTIVE RWY AT LOW ALT, AND SEEMS WISE TO FLY THE RECOMMENDED PATTERN AT UNCTLED FIELDS.
