Narrative:
While on approach to mia runway 27R in VFR conditions landing gear was lowered and observed no green lights for left main. A quick test of lights did not illuminate this light, go around initiated, receiving vectors from mia approach. Aircraft control and communication was taken over by myself and the first officer checked the pilots operating manual. We found no appropriate procedure then attempted to relamp. In this effort the lens/bulbs assembly became detached from the drawer/panel assembly with drawer recessed in panel. Further efforts at repair were unsuccessful. After consulting maintenance it was agreed the EICAS would provide a satisfactory indication of a safe gear (no messages). An uneventful landing was made. Supplemental information from acn 272163: after discussing the event with maintenance we found this has occurred several times in the past. Although relamping by flcs is discouraged we saw little choice. Given all this, perhaps such 'light' problems should be addressed in the aircraft pilots operating manual.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WDB ON APCH HAS NO GREEN LIGHTS FOR GEAR.
Narrative: WHILE ON APCH TO MIA RWY 27R IN VFR CONDITIONS LNDG GEAR WAS LOWERED AND OBSERVED NO GREEN LIGHTS FOR L MAIN. A QUICK TEST OF LIGHTS DID NOT ILLUMINATE THIS LIGHT, GAR INITIATED, RECEIVING VECTORS FROM MIA APCH. ACFT CTL AND COM WAS TAKEN OVER BY MYSELF AND THE FO CHKED THE PLTS OPERATING MANUAL. WE FOUND NO APPROPRIATE PROC THEN ATTEMPTED TO RELAMP. IN THIS EFFORT THE LENS/BULBS ASSEMBLY BECAME DETACHED FROM THE DRAWER/PANEL ASSEMBLY WITH DRAWER RECESSED IN PANEL. FURTHER EFFORTS AT REPAIR WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. AFTER CONSULTING MAINT IT WAS AGREED THE EICAS WOULD PROVIDE A SATISFACTORY INDICATION OF A SAFE GEAR (NO MESSAGES). AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 272163: AFTER DISCUSSING THE EVENT WITH MAINT WE FOUND THIS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST. ALTHOUGH RELAMPING BY FLCS IS DISCOURAGED WE SAW LITTLE CHOICE. GIVEN ALL THIS, PERHAPS SUCH 'LIGHT' PROBS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN THE ACFT PLTS OPERATING MANUAL.
