Narrative:
On climb out from iah, departure issued heading of 020 degrees, and after on the heading assigned, crew decided to deviation to the north for WX avoidance and made a call to departure, but was blocked or stepped on by other xmissions. Subsequently, the departure controller called asking our heading and reason for deviation and that there was traffic at our 12 O'clock position that could be conflicting with our flight path and gave us a heading of 090 degrees to avoid the possible conflict. After traffic was no factor, we received a heading of 360 degrees to resume navigation to join the airway. Then an explanation from the controller as to the events and reasons we should not have deviated off course until cleared by ATC. The crew felt the necessity was imperative for the safety of the crew, passenger and aircraft and that we were sure that ATC could see this deviation and plan accordingly. Coordination between ATC and aircraft is of the highest concern for the safety in our airway system and we are thankful this system worked today. Supplemental information from acn 272287: very hazy day -- on assigned takeoff heading we encountered a strong twring cumulus that was directly in our flight path. We had to take evasive action to miss it, but were not able to alert controller before turning -- he was talking to another aircraft and we could not get in on frequency. I corrected back to assigned heading, and controller informed us we hadn't informed him before turning and that we had had a potential problem with a helicopter.

Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT DURING HDG TRACK WX DEV.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT FROM IAH, DEP ISSUED HDG OF 020 DEGS, AND AFTER ON THE HDG ASSIGNED, CREW DECIDED TO DEV TO THE N FOR WX AVOIDANCE AND MADE A CALL TO DEP, BUT WAS BLOCKED OR STEPPED ON BY OTHER XMISSIONS.
