Narrative:
Approach controller asked if we had a 757 at 1 O'clock position. Both the copilot and I confirmed a 757 at our 1 O'clock position. I advised the controller we had it in sight and he said that we were cleared for a visual approach for runway 24R the 757 was for the 24L runway and that we should not pass him. On our base leg the controller kept asking if we had the traffic and we kept saying yes until he descended into the haze at which time I said we no longer could see him. We were on right base the 757 was lined up with 24L and he was at our 2:30 position. The controller was now indicating our traffic was at our 11:30 position and high and it was obvious as we were going to turn on final that we would be ahead of this aircraft. We saw a 757 in our 1 O'clock position when he cleared us for the visual but obviously it was not the 757 he meant. This 757 was well behind the 757 we saw in our 1 O'clock position. The controller did not communication to us in a timely manner that he was concerned that we would be ahead of his traffic and his call for 1 O'clock traffic (his intended) was not 1 O'clock for us. He could have very easily said our traffic was the second 757. Then we would have been alerted to look for another 757. As it was we saw one at our 1 O'clock and took our instructions off of him.
