Narrative:
I was cleared to land in company's C208B (caravan). I was told by the tower once again that I was #1 cleared to land runway 9 and to start my left base. Meanwhile a baron reports over levitown water tank (approximately 7 mi southwest of my position) inbound for landing and he is instructed to follow me and that he will be #2 for landing. I turned base and right before I turned final I scanned to the right to look for the aircraft which I assumed was still pretty far out since I did not see him. The caravan has a pretty large blind spot at the 1-2 O'clock low position and that is exactly where he was. As I turned final on a left descending turn he appeared at my 2 O'clock and since I was descending he appeared to be climbing (perspective only, he was probably level or descending at a lesser rate). I estimate that I missed him by approximately 25 ft. He was faster than I was and cut me off from right to left as I reported the incident to the tower and asked his intentions. The controller said he was supposed to be following me and instructed him to make a right 360 degree turn which would have put him right on me again since I was now at his 4 O'clock position. He replied unable (thank god!) and then I was instructed to turn right to join a right downwind for runway 9 and to follow another traffic #2 cleared to land. Very scary incident! It was definitely not my day!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN 2 SMT APCH TO LAND AT TWR CTL ARPT.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO LAND IN COMPANY'S C208B (CARAVAN). I WAS TOLD BY THE TWR ONCE AGAIN THAT I WAS #1 CLRED TO LAND RWY 9 AND TO START MY L BASE. MEANWHILE A BARON RPTS OVER LEVITOWN WATER TANK (APPROX 7 MI SW OF MY POS) INBOUND FOR LNDG AND HE IS INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW ME AND THAT HE WILL BE #2 FOR LNDG. I TURNED BASE AND RIGHT BEFORE I TURNED FINAL I SCANNED TO THE R TO LOOK FOR THE ACFT WHICH I ASSUMED WAS STILL PRETTY FAR OUT SINCE I DID NOT SEE HIM. THE CARAVAN HAS A PRETTY LARGE BLIND SPOT AT THE 1-2 O'CLOCK LOW POS AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHERE HE WAS. AS I TURNED FINAL ON A L DSNDING TURN HE APPEARED AT MY 2 O'CLOCK AND SINCE I WAS DSNDING HE APPEARED TO BE CLBING (PERSPECTIVE ONLY, HE WAS PROBABLY LEVEL OR DSNDING AT A LESSER RATE). I ESTIMATE THAT I MISSED HIM BY APPROX 25 FT. HE WAS FASTER THAN I WAS AND CUT ME OFF FROM R TO L AS I RPTED THE INCIDENT TO THE TWR AND ASKED HIS INTENTIONS. THE CTLR SAID HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOLLOWING ME AND INSTRUCTED HIM TO MAKE A R 360 DEG TURN WHICH WOULD HAVE PUT HIM RIGHT ON ME AGAIN SINCE I WAS NOW AT HIS 4 O'CLOCK POS. HE REPLIED UNABLE (THANK GOD!) AND THEN I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TURN R TO JOIN A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 9 AND TO FOLLOW ANOTHER TFC #2 CLRED TO LAND. VERY SCARY INCIDENT! IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT MY DAY!
