Narrative:
I was on a visual approach to runway 32 at dothan, al, about 600 ft AGL. The tower had been/was talking to an hu-1 helicopter and had instructed him to remain west of the centerline of R32 because of my approach. At some point, I heard the helicopter say something about 'east' and the tower operator sharply reminded him to stay west of R32. At that point I looked around, and in my 7 O'clock position saw a helicopter at my altitude, less than 100 ft from me. The dothan tower later informed me that they had a lot of trouble with these helicopters ignoring their instructions. The dothan tower has been asked to save the tapes. Suggest you immediately call and ask again that the tape be saved. Aircraft I was flying was a baron 55.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN AN SMT ON SHORT FINAL VISUAL APCH AND A MIL HELI WITHIN THE ATA.
Narrative: I WAS ON A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 32 AT DOTHAN, AL, ABOUT 600 FT AGL. THE TWR HAD BEEN/WAS TALKING TO AN HU-1 HELI AND HAD INSTRUCTED HIM TO REMAIN W OF THE CTRLINE OF R32 BECAUSE OF MY APCH. AT SOME POINT, I HEARD THE HELI SAY SOMETHING ABOUT 'E' AND THE TWR OPERATOR SHARPLY REMINDED HIM TO STAY W OF R32. AT THAT POINT I LOOKED AROUND, AND IN MY 7 O'CLOCK POS SAW A HELI AT MY ALT, LESS THAN 100 FT FROM ME. THE DOTHAN TWR LATER INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH THESE HELIS IGNORING THEIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE DOTHAN TWR HAS BEEN ASKED TO SAVE THE TAPES. SUGGEST YOU IMMEDIATELY CALL AND ASK AGAIN THAT THE TAPE BE SAVED. ACFT I WAS FLYING WAS A BARON 55.
