Narrative:

Picked up aircraft at swf maintenance facility. Logbook had airworthiness release signed off at X30, jun/xx/94. After flying (3) legs (1 repo, 2 revenue). We arrived at mdt and were told to notify flight operations iad. Maintenance control advised us that an ad on the aircraft was not in compliance as the work had not been done at the maintenance facility even though the airworthiness release had been signed off. Contacted chief pilot's office who told me FAA had been voluntarily notified of non-compliance and pilots would not be held responsible! Aircraft was grounded at mdt. Crew was dead-headed home on a later flight. With the airworthiness release signed and dated, I don't know how else the crew could determine that the airworthiness directive had not been complied with.
