Narrative:
This will be difficult, but please try to follow it. I am on a partial line with rsv days, based in dtw. I was assigned to give a fellow captain a line check (I am a check airman) out of msp. So, the company assigned me away from my base in dtw. I must eventually return to dtw, on the company's time. Following this check ride assignment, the company assigned me to a 3-DAY trip out of msp on my rsv days. The 3RD day returned on the morning of the jun/xa/94 in msp. The night of jun/xa/94 I had a high speed in dtw. Since I chose to trade my 2-DAY beginning the jun/xb/94 for the high speed on jun/xx/94 (my choice). Then my travel to dtw for the high speed is on my time and not the company's. The company had to return me anyway because of my msp line check assignment. As it turns out, I still could have traveled either the morning or evening of the jun/xa/94 to my high speed in dtw, and still had an 8 hour rest. Why did I trade the 2-DAY on the jun/xa/94 for the high speed on jun/xb/94 in dtw? So that I could fly back to msp on the morning of the jun/xa/94 to attend my instructor's training for cockpit resource management on the afternoon of jun/xb/94 in msp. I traveled to dtw (on my time, because of my choice in trip trades) and on arrival I was reassigned to a high speed trip which left in 25 mins. This reassignment would then require me to be in dtw, requiring travel from msp to dtw, requiring proper rest! They asked me to trade the high speeds just the previous night. Again, that would have been 'my choice,' so I would have traveled on 'my time.' now with this new high speed, I wouldn't have had enough time to travel from msp direct dtw and have an 8 hour rest. This new assignment, with the 'required' travel to dtw, also put me over on duty hours. Travel from msp direct dtw could have been as late as XJ00 for the reassignment. My company is paying me time for my return to base (msp direct dtw) because of my check airman assignment. How can they call it 'my time' and still pay me for it? I was told that I didn't have a choice in the assignment of the new high speed. Whether I am traveling on 'my time' or not, they approved the first high speed and I would have received 8 hours of rest. The reassignment would not have if report time was an hour before the flight time from msp direct dtw.

Title: CAPT OF A MDT QUESTIONED THE LEGAL STATUS OF A TOTAL 'ON DUTY' ASSIGNMENT.
Narrative: THIS WILL BE DIFFICULT, BUT PLEASE TRY TO FOLLOW IT. I AM ON A PARTIAL LINE WITH RSV DAYS, BASED IN DTW. I WAS ASSIGNED TO GIVE A FELLOW CAPT A LINE CHK (I AM A CHK AIRMAN) OUT OF MSP. SO, THE COMPANY ASSIGNED ME AWAY FROM MY BASE IN DTW. I MUST EVENTUALLY RETURN TO DTW, ON THE COMPANY'S TIME. FOLLOWING THIS CHK RIDE ASSIGNMENT, THE COMPANY ASSIGNED ME TO A 3-DAY TRIP OUT OF MSP ON MY RSV DAYS. THE 3RD DAY RETURNED ON THE MORNING OF THE JUN/XA/94 IN MSP. THE NIGHT OF JUN/XA/94 I HAD A HIGH SPD IN DTW. SINCE I CHOSE TO TRADE MY 2-DAY BEGINNING THE JUN/XB/94 FOR THE HIGH SPD ON JUN/XX/94 (MY CHOICE). THEN MY TRAVEL TO DTW FOR THE HIGH SPD IS ON MY TIME AND NOT THE COMPANY'S. THE COMPANY HAD TO RETURN ME ANYWAY BECAUSE OF MY MSP LINE CHK ASSIGNMENT. AS IT TURNS OUT, I STILL COULD HAVE TRAVELED EITHER THE MORNING OR EVENING OF THE JUN/XA/94 TO MY HIGH SPD IN DTW, AND STILL HAD AN 8 HR REST. WHY DID I TRADE THE 2-DAY ON THE JUN/XA/94 FOR THE HIGH SPD ON JUN/XB/94 IN DTW? SO THAT I COULD FLY BACK TO MSP ON THE MORNING OF THE JUN/XA/94 TO ATTEND MY INSTRUCTOR'S TRAINING FOR COCKPIT RESOURCE MGMNT ON THE AFTERNOON OF JUN/XB/94 IN MSP. I TRAVELED TO DTW (ON MY TIME, BECAUSE OF MY CHOICE IN TRIP TRADES) AND ON ARR I WAS REASSIGNED TO A HIGH SPD TRIP WHICH LEFT IN 25 MINS. THIS REASSIGNMENT WOULD THEN REQUIRE ME TO BE IN DTW, REQUIRING TRAVEL FROM MSP TO DTW, REQUIRING PROPER REST! THEY ASKED ME TO TRADE THE HIGH SPDS JUST THE PREVIOUS NIGHT. AGAIN, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN 'MY CHOICE,' SO I WOULD HAVE TRAVELED ON 'MY TIME.' NOW WITH THIS NEW HIGH SPD, I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO TRAVEL FROM MSP DIRECT DTW AND HAVE AN 8 HR REST. THIS NEW ASSIGNMENT, WITH THE 'REQUIRED' TRAVEL TO DTW, ALSO PUT ME OVER ON DUTY HRS. TRAVEL FROM MSP DIRECT DTW COULD HAVE BEEN AS LATE AS XJ00 FOR THE REASSIGNMENT. MY COMPANY IS PAYING ME TIME FOR MY RETURN TO BASE (MSP DIRECT DTW) BECAUSE OF MY CHK AIRMAN ASSIGNMENT. HOW CAN THEY CALL IT 'MY TIME' AND STILL PAY ME FOR IT? I WAS TOLD THAT I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE IN THE ASSIGNMENT OF THE NEW HIGH SPD. WHETHER I AM TRAVELING ON 'MY TIME' OR NOT, THEY APPROVED THE FIRST HIGH SPD AND I WOULD HAVE RECEIVED 8 HRS OF REST. THE REASSIGNMENT WOULD NOT HAVE IF RPT TIME WAS AN HR BEFORE THE FLT TIME FROM MSP DIRECT DTW.
