Narrative:
When about 10 south of jfk we were cleared direct to colt's neck VOR. We proceeded to col then to etx VOR. Near 39N we were almost struck on the left side by a C-152 at about the same altitude. He was heading approximately 030 degrees. We were headed about 290 degrees. We were at 2000 ft doing about 190 KIAS. We were in a BE90. I do much of my flying in the northeast, and it seems ZNY and ZBW delight in finding the most circuitous rtes possible. Flying mdt direct pvd you get pretty direct routing usually, but going wbound the route always goes pvd V146 put V146 baf V292 sages V408 lhy V93 dummr dir mdt or cxy. This routing usually adds 15 mins to the flight time as compared to the more direct route. Yesterday, I was fed up with the inflexibility of TRACON and center routing and chose to go direct VFR and could have been killed. I could not have gone higher due to ceiling in that area. I wish we could get some relief on the wbound rtes.
