Narrative:
We departed on runway 34 from hpn, ny, to dca. The takeoff roll and climb went uneventfully until the captain called for climb power. I (the PNF) began to set climb power when I noticed the master caution light illuminate. I looked up at the caution panel and noticed the check fire detect caution light and immediately notified the captain. He then executed the memory items which led to the illumination of the #2 engine fire warning. We then executed the engine fire in-flight checklist. Declared an emergency to ATC and requested vectors to the ILS runway 34 back into hpn. I then notified the flight attendant and the passenger. Since we had 3 remaining engines, the rest of the flight was uneventful. After turning off of the runway, the captain determined the fire warning to be an electrical short, and not a fire. (Both fire bottles were discharged in the air). We then deplaned the passenger and started our reports.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC ACTIVATED THE PWRPLANT FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLES AFTER OBSERVING A PWRPLANT FIRE WARNING AND RETURNED TO LAND.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED ON RWY 34 FROM HPN, NY, TO DCA. THE TKOF ROLL AND CLB WENT UNEVENTFULLY UNTIL THE CAPT CALLED FOR CLB PWR. I (THE PNF) BEGAN TO SET CLB PWR WHEN I NOTICED THE MASTER CAUTION LIGHT ILLUMINATE. I LOOKED UP AT THE CAUTION PANEL AND NOTICED THE CHK FIRE DETECT CAUTION LIGHT AND IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED THE CAPT. HE THEN EXECUTED THE MEMORY ITEMS WHICH LED TO THE ILLUMINATION OF THE #2 ENG FIRE WARNING. WE THEN EXECUTED THE ENG FIRE INFLT CHKLIST. DECLARED AN EMER TO ATC AND REQUESTED VECTORS TO THE ILS RWY 34 BACK INTO HPN. I THEN NOTIFIED THE FLT ATTENDANT AND THE PAX. SINCE WE HAD 3 REMAINING ENGS, THE REST OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. AFTER TURNING OFF OF THE RWY, THE CAPT DETERMINED THE FIRE WARNING TO BE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT, AND NOT A FIRE. (BOTH FIRE BOTTLES WERE DISCHARGED IN THE AIR). WE THEN DEPLANED THE PAX AND STARTED OUR RPTS.
