Narrative:
Cargo smoke warning came on. Performed emergency checklist, requested priority handling, crash and rescue at landing, and immediate return for landing. Although this warning may have been caused by arcing cargo light (located near detector) this aircraft has had numerous false warnings due to high humidity and faulty warning system. We need clear training as to how these warnings should be handled. (If light is out, is emergency past? If light comes on during taxi, should we activate extinguisher and evacuate/evacuation aircraft?) also, improvement of the system may help. Supplemental information from acn 370159: once fire extinguisher was activated, warning light went out. We advised ATC of intention to return to boston. Aircraft was stopped clear of runway, captain and fire crews inspected cargo area, found no evidence of fire. Aircraft was closed up, and taxied to gate to off-load passenger.
