Narrative:

During a preflight check, an aircraft was found to have a discharge light illuminated for the cargo fire extinguishing/detection system. Troubleshooting was performed and the part was ordered for the corrective action. Part arrived much later, so part information was given to the next shift (my shift). After the part arrived, I removed the original defective part and installed the new part per B737 maintenance manual. All checks and preflight tests were normal. The next morning our maintenance office received a call regarding the possibility that the part I installed was of incorrect effectivity for that particular aircraft. A check of the B737 illustrated part catalog verified this was true. Upon receipt of this information, the aircraft was grounded and the correct part was ordered and installed. The parts appear identical except for the manufacturer part information on the placard. The parts problem was caused by improper parts information given to me from the previous shift.

Title: A B737-200 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE INCORRECT CARGO COMPARTMENT FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE INSTALLED.

Narrative: DURING A PREFLT CHK, AN ACFT WAS FOUND TO HAVE A DISCHARGE LIGHT ILLUMINATED FOR THE CARGO FIRE EXTINGUISHING/DETECTION SYS. TROUBLESHOOTING WAS PERFORMED AND THE PART WAS ORDERED FOR THE CORRECTIVE ACTION. PART ARRIVED MUCH LATER, SO PART INFO WAS GIVEN TO THE NEXT SHIFT (MY SHIFT). AFTER THE PART ARRIVED, I REMOVED THE ORIGINAL DEFECTIVE PART AND INSTALLED THE NEW PART PER B737 MAINT MANUAL. ALL CHKS AND PREFLT TESTS WERE NORMAL. THE NEXT MORNING OUR MAINT OFFICE RECEIVED A CALL REGARDING THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE PART I INSTALLED WAS OF INCORRECT EFFECTIVITY FOR THAT PARTICULAR ACFT. A CHK OF THE B737 ILLUSTRATED PART CATALOG VERIFIED THIS WAS TRUE. UPON RECEIPT OF THIS INFO, THE ACFT WAS GNDED AND THE CORRECT PART WAS ORDERED AND INSTALLED. THE PARTS APPEAR IDENTICAL EXCEPT FOR THE MANUFACTURER PART INFO ON THE PLACARD. THE PARTS PROB WAS CAUSED BY IMPROPER PARTS INFO GIVEN TO ME FROM THE PREVIOUS SHIFT.
