Narrative:
Approximately 100 mi east of alexandria VOR, our #1 engine failed. We were flying an md-80 aircraft. Airlines flight from lga to iah. I declared an emergency with ATC and requested a lower altitude. There was a line of thunderstorms (solid line) just north of msy, that we decided not to try to penetrate and felt that the facilities and emergency equipment and runway lengths at aex, btr, lft were not suitable. We discussed this and decided iah was our best suitable airport. We continued on to iah with no further incidents and made a normal single engine landing.
