Narrative:

Landed in ord on runway 14R without receiving landing clearance from tower. I believe the event occurred due to several factors. The crew was made up of myself, first officer who was a senior management captain and reserve so. The WX and traffic was heavy when we were cleared for approach. We were told to keep speed up till OM and switch to tower at marker. Just prior to marker at about 2800 ft, 8 DME on ILS, we had a lightning strike which caused a momentary loss of navigation instruments. This event I believe caused the first officer not to switch over to the tower and I forgot to verify that we had received a landing clearance. I landed and rolled out normally and realized we were still on approach control frequency. We switched to tower frequency and were asked if we received the green light -- we said we did! Supplemental information from acn 283862:I took aircraft and flew until he retuned his ILS, along with the strike, we had light/moderate turbulence and gusty winds. After touchdown I discovered that I had not contacted the tower and we had landed without a clearance. Upon contacting the tower. They thought we had a communication problem and asked if we had seen the green light. Of course, I replied that we had! When confronted by a complex (yet familiar) clrncs and startled or distraction even experienced pilots can make fundamental mistakes.

Title: UNAUTH LNDG AFTER WDB EXPERIENCES A LIGHTNING STRIKE ON APCH.

Narrative: LANDED IN ORD ON RWY 14R WITHOUT RECEIVING LNDG CLRNC FROM TWR. I BELIEVE THE EVENT OCCURRED DUE TO SEVERAL FACTORS. THE CREW WAS MADE UP OF MYSELF, FO WHO WAS A SENIOR MGMNT CAPT AND RESERVE SO. THE WX AND TFC WAS HVY WHEN WE WERE CLRED FOR APCH. WE WERE TOLD TO KEEP SPD UP TILL OM AND SWITCH TO TWR AT MARKER. JUST PRIOR TO MARKER AT ABOUT 2800 FT, 8 DME ON ILS, WE HAD A LIGHTNING STRIKE WHICH CAUSED A MOMENTARY LOSS OF NAV INSTS. THIS EVENT I BELIEVE CAUSED THE FO NOT TO SWITCH OVER TO THE TWR AND I FORGOT TO VERIFY THAT WE HAD RECEIVED A LNDG CLRNC. I LANDED AND ROLLED OUT NORMALLY AND REALIZED WE WERE STILL ON APCH CTL FREQ. WE SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ AND WERE ASKED IF WE RECEIVED THE GREEN LIGHT -- WE SAID WE DID! SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 283862:I TOOK ACFT AND FLEW UNTIL HE RETUNED HIS ILS, ALONG WITH THE STRIKE, WE HAD LIGHT/MODERATE TURB AND GUSTY WINDS. AFTER TOUCHDOWN I DISCOVERED THAT I HAD NOT CONTACTED THE TWR AND WE HAD LANDED WITHOUT A CLRNC. UPON CONTACTING THE TWR. THEY THOUGHT WE HAD A COM PROB AND ASKED IF WE HAD SEEN THE GREEN LIGHT. OF COURSE, I REPLIED THAT WE HAD! WHEN CONFRONTED BY A COMPLEX (YET FAMILIAR) CLRNCS AND STARTLED OR DISTR EVEN EXPERIENCED PLTS CAN MAKE FUNDAMENTAL MISTAKES.
