Narrative:
Failed to lean engine fuel. Used more fuel than anticipated in a specific amount of time -- cessna 150. 40 hours prior to occurrence, had work on engine done. Mechanic had suggested I run the fuel rich to cool engine and avoid overheating. Prior to this time I had leaned engine fuel and had 4 hours -- 4 hours 15 mins fuel. This day I had flown for 3-3 1/2 hours and planned to land in hastings, neb, for fuel. When I experienced the engine/fuel problem -- I immediately turned around, called grand island approach and informed them of possible problem and requested landing instructions. They cleared me to land which I did without incident or accident. I have since modified my time between fuel stops to 2 1/2 hours. I never want to get close to any emergency situation again. This was inadvertent.
