Narrative:

I was flying metropolitan traffic and was turning eastbound north of I-8 when south traffic passed off my left wing. I was monitoring myf tower and heard the tower hand south off to lindbergh tower for a class B clearance. I was staying north of the 084 degree radial and therefore didn't need a class B clearance. Suddenly myf tower called the traffic to me. We avoided each other. Afterwards tower said that south was in class B airspace. If south was in class B and I was south of south position, I must have been in class B. Yet my VOR, (which was checked just prior to flight) showed me clearly north of class B airspace. I'm still unsure if I encroached into class B or not but from this point forward I'm not going south of the 076 degree right without a clearance.
