Narrative:

I was flying aircraft and received message from company dispatch via ACARS that runway 4 edge lights OTS but every other light was being pwred by temporary battery operated lights every 200 ft. 'Operation legal for landing.' in fact, it was edge threshold lights that were inoperative and air carrier flight operations manual requires every threshold edge light inoperative be replaced 1 for 1, not every other one. Correction suggestion: ATIS and dispatch should be more specific describing inoperative components.
