Narrative:
Upon landing at lax international runway 24R, we encountered wake turbulence from a preceding 747 that had landed. We had difficulty landing and elected to go around. Socal departure vectored us back to a right downwind and base for a runway 24L visual approach. Haze and low scattered clouds created some visibility problems even though visibility was reported at 7 mi. We entered a right base for runway 24L and were cleared for a visual behind a jetstream. Numerous other aircraft and radio congestion distraction myself and the first officer. I overshot the runway 24L centerline, momentarily converging with a metroliner on a runway 25 right approach. Lax tower queried us of our position. Recognizing our error I corrected back to the runway 24L centerline. We appeared to come within 2000 ft of the metroliner. Contributing factors to our distraction were: unfamiliar with an approach from the north, poor visibility and lots of traffic and radio congestion.

Title: TFC CONFLICT DURING APCH.
Narrative: UPON LNDG AT LAX INTL RWY 24R, WE ENCOUNTERED WAKE TURB FROM A PRECEDING 747 THAT HAD LANDED. WE HAD DIFFICULTY LNDG AND ELECTED TO GAR. SOCAL DEP VECTORED US BACK TO A R DOWNWIND AND BASE FOR A RWY 24L VISUAL APCH. HAZE AND LOW SCATTERED CLOUDS CREATED SOME VISIBILITY PROBS EVEN THOUGH VISIBILITY WAS RPTED AT 7 MI. WE ENTERED A R BASE FOR RWY 24L AND WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL BEHIND A JETSTREAM. NUMEROUS OTHER ACFT AND RADIO CONGESTION DISTR MYSELF AND THE FO. I OVERSHOT THE RWY 24L CTRLINE, MOMENTARILY CONVERGING WITH A METROLINER ON A RWY 25 R APCH. LAX TWR QUERIED US OF OUR POS. RECOGNIZING OUR ERROR I CORRECTED BACK TO THE RWY 24L CTRLINE. WE APPEARED TO COME WITHIN 2000 FT OF THE METROLINER. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO OUR DISTR WERE: UNFAMILIAR WITH AN APCH FROM THE N, POOR VISIBILITY AND LOTS OF TFC AND RADIO CONGESTION.
