Narrative:
I was inbound to land at denton municipal airport (dto) from the west. I was headed to cross midfield to enter a left downwind to land runway 17. I monitored the local unicom frequency (122.7) to determine the amount and location of traffic in the area. At approximately 2 mi west of the field, I radioed my location and intentions. As I approached midfield, I heard an aircraft radio that he was 'final 17, denton, for touch and go.' I responded that I was midfield preparing to enter a left downwind for runway 17 at traffic pattern altitude. As I crossed midfield. I noticed an aircraft at my 12 O'clock position. To avoid any conflict. I immediately descended 200-300 ft while in a right turn to 180 degrees to position myself behind the aircraft I had seen. When I thought I had adequate clearance, I made a climbing left turn back to 360 degrees and traffic pattern altitude. I then continued in the pattern for a normal landing without further incident. The incident probably could have been avoided had the other aircraft been monitoring or notifying other aircraft of their intentions.

Title: RPTR DSNDED 200 FT TO MISS ANOTHER AIRPLANE ALSO ON ENTRY TO DOWNWIND THAT APPARENTLY DID NOT MAKE ANY OF THE CUSTOMARY CALLS ENTERING THE PATTERN.
Narrative: I WAS INBOUND TO LAND AT DENTON MUNICIPAL ARPT (DTO) FROM THE W. I WAS HEADED TO CROSS MIDFIELD TO ENTER A L DOWNWIND TO LAND RWY 17. I MONITORED THE LCL UNICOM FREQ (122.7) TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT AND LOCATION OF TFC IN THE AREA. AT APPROX 2 MI W OF THE FIELD, I RADIOED MY LOCATION AND INTENTIONS. AS I APCHED MIDFIELD, I HEARD AN ACFT RADIO THAT HE WAS 'FINAL 17, DENTON, FOR TOUCH AND GO.' I RESPONDED THAT I WAS MIDFIELD PREPARING TO ENTER A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 17 AT TFC PATTERN ALT. AS I CROSSED MIDFIELD. I NOTICED AN ACFT AT MY 12 O'CLOCK POS. TO AVOID ANY CONFLICT. I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED 200-300 FT WHILE IN A R TURN TO 180 DEGS TO POS MYSELF BEHIND THE ACFT I HAD SEEN. WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD ADEQUATE CLRNC, I MADE A CLBING L TURN BACK TO 360 DEGS AND TFC PATTERN ALT. I THEN CONTINUED IN THE PATTERN FOR A NORMAL LNDG WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE INCIDENT PROBABLY COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED HAD THE OTHER ACFT BEEN MONITORING OR NOTIFYING OTHER ACFT OF THEIR INTENTIONS.
