Narrative:
Departure clearance from seattle clearance delivery read mountain 3 SID. Upon departure, aircraft flown to heading 070 as per SID, however distance (5 mi) requirements were not met before turn initiated. Resulted in traffic being called within 4 mi and aircraft being revectored to southeast. ATC advised PF that 'pilot deviation of procedure had occurred and a report would probably be filed with FAA upon verification of clearance issued and received. In order to prevent this from happening, the crew should have reviewed this SID aloud, and to each other as is our normal procedure. In this particular case, in my opinion, a simple departure instruction of maintain runway heading would have eliminated any possible problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN LTT CPR JET TURNED AFTER TKOF TOO EARLY AND THEREFORE, DID NOT FOLLOW SID PROC.
Narrative: DEP CLRNC FROM SEATTLE CLRNC DELIVERY READ MOUNTAIN 3 SID. UPON DEP, ACFT FLOWN TO HDG 070 AS PER SID, HOWEVER DISTANCE (5 MI) REQUIREMENTS WERE NOT MET BEFORE TURN INITIATED. RESULTED IN TFC BEING CALLED WITHIN 4 MI AND ACFT BEING REVECTORED TO SE. ATC ADVISED PF THAT 'PLTDEV OF PROC HAD OCCURRED AND A RPT WOULD PROBABLY BE FILED WITH FAA UPON VERIFICATION OF CLRNC ISSUED AND RECEIVED. IN ORDER TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING, THE CREW SHOULD HAVE REVIEWED THIS SID ALOUD, AND TO EACH OTHER AS IS OUR NORMAL PROC. IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, IN MY OPINION, A SIMPLE DEP INSTRUCTION OF MAINTAIN RWY HDG WOULD HAVE ELIMINATED ANY POSSIBLE PROB.
