Narrative:
On descent into bdl we were given a crossing restr of 10 NM south of mad VOR at 10000 ft. During the descent we were given a frequency change. I checked on with ATC indicating we were descending to 10000 ft. The controller acknowledged and later, after we were established at 10000 told us we needed to be at 12000 ft. I again told him our restr was 10 south at 10000 ft. He told us to climb to 11000 ft we complied and continued to bdl. The controller told us that the previous controller had issued 10 NM south at 12000 ft.

Narrative: ON DSCNT INTO BDL WE WERE GIVEN A XING RESTR OF 10 NM S OF MAD VOR AT 10000 FT. DURING THE DSCNT WE WERE GIVEN A FREQ CHANGE. I CHKED ON WITH ATC INDICATING WE WERE DSNDING TO 10000 FT. THE CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED AND LATER, AFTER WE WERE ESTABLISHED AT 10000 TOLD US WE NEEDED TO BE AT 12000 FT. I AGAIN TOLD HIM OUR RESTR WAS 10 S AT 10000 FT. HE TOLD US TO CLB TO 11000 FT WE COMPLIED AND CONTINUED TO BDL. THE CTLR TOLD US THAT THE PREVIOUS CTLR HAD ISSUED 10 NM S AT 12000 FT.
