Narrative:
Clearance: hornet 4 SID, maintain 8000 ft vectors for the merit transition. Climbing out of about 6000 ft, heading 090 degrees we received a TCASII TA, ATC gave us a heading of 120 degrees and 7000 ft, at the same time we got an RA to climb in excess of 5000 FPM. The conflicting aircraft (air carrier Y) stated they were descending due to 'RA.' at approximately 8400 ft we got a 'clear of conflict' from the TCASII with the other aircraft passing approximately 500 ft below. We then were cleared to 12000 ft and continued to ewr.
