Narrative:
Encountered wake turbulence at 1500 ft AGL. Aircraft rolled sharply to right. Autoplt disconnected. First officer leveled wings, then flew above GS and reduced speed to increase spacing. ATC cleared us for visual approach, speed 180 KTS. Only 2 1/2 mi (TCASII) behind company md-80 with surface winds 290 degrees at 6 KTS. ATC should never space that close, period! All size aircraft do create a wake.
