Narrative:

After receiving an IFR clearance, I was cleared to taxi to runway 23 for departure. While reading back the clearance, a dc-9 taxied from my right to left eastbound. I followed the dc-9 at a distance of approximately 200 yards behind, to the approach end of the west runway (runway 29). There was no traffic and the dc-9 was cleared for takeoff prior to reaching the approach end. I followed almost to the runup area before realizing I had crossed runway 23 and was headed to runway 29. Mistake was my fault as I didn't check airport layout prior to taxi and was comfortable both the dc-9 and I were going to runway 23. There was almost no traffic and I was too relaxed and made too many assumptions. Ground control did not catch my crossing runway 23 until I called them on the far side of runway 23.

Title: PLT OF GOV SMT TWIN FOLLOWED ANOTHER ACFT DURING TAXI FOR TKOF AND INADVERTENTLY CROSSED THE RWY TO WHICH HE WAS CLRED.

Narrative: AFTER RECEIVING AN IFR CLRNC, I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 23 FOR DEP. WHILE READING BACK THE CLRNC, A DC-9 TAXIED FROM MY R TO L EBOUND. I FOLLOWED THE DC-9 AT A DISTANCE OF APPROX 200 YARDS BEHIND, TO THE APCH END OF THE W RWY (RWY 29). THERE WAS NO TFC AND THE DC-9 WAS CLRED FOR TKOF PRIOR TO REACHING THE APCH END. I FOLLOWED ALMOST TO THE RUNUP AREA BEFORE REALIZING I HAD CROSSED RWY 23 AND WAS HEADED TO RWY 29. MISTAKE WAS MY FAULT AS I DIDN'T CHK ARPT LAYOUT PRIOR TO TAXI AND WAS COMFORTABLE BOTH THE DC-9 AND I WERE GOING TO RWY 23. THERE WAS ALMOST NO TFC AND I WAS TOO RELAXED AND MADE TOO MANY ASSUMPTIONS. GND CTL DID NOT CATCH MY XING RWY 23 UNTIL I CALLED THEM ON THE FAR SIDE OF RWY 23.
