Narrative:
While on vectors to cvg we were turned on base and 'cleared for the ILS runway 18L approach.' on our initial check in with approach, both captain and I thought the controller had said 'expect runway 18R' and we had briefed and set up this approach. When we received the runway 18L clearance, the controller then called another aircraft. As soon as he quit talking I asked 'confirm runway 18L!' he then told us that was what he had told us to expect and if we couldn't make it he would take us out for another try. I responded 'well we thought you said runway 18R.' I set up the ILS and though we overshot final by about 1 NM, we regained the ILS and landed uneventfully.

ON OUR INITIAL CHK IN WITH APCH, BOTH CAPT AND I THOUGHT THE CTLR HAD SAID 'EXPECT RWY 18R' AND WE HAD BRIEFED AND SET UP THIS APCH. WHEN WE RECEIVED THE RWY 18L CLRNC, THE CTLR THEN CALLED ANOTHER ACFT. AS SOON AS HE QUIT TALKING I ASKED 'CONFIRM RWY 18L!'
