Narrative:
Following the landing on runway 28L at sfo, the tower controller cleared our aircraft to exit left at intersection 'kilo.' we were still at 110 KTS indicated airspeed when the clearance was issued. The captain was flying (landing), and decelerating the airplane through 80 KTS indicated. When we were approaching intersection 'delta.' looking forward toward intersection kilo the captain noticed barricades that appeared to him, to be at kilo. Captain elected to stop the aircraft and attempt to turn off at delta. We were slightly past delta -- when we sharply started a left turn off the runway. As we turned left we were still partially on the runway, but west of delta. The airplane was now facing south with several white taxiway markings (batons) in front of the airplane. If we could have continued a sharp left turn we could have returned to the runway surface. The tower at this time instructed us to clear the runway to the right inadvertently run over some taxiway markings. The barricades which created some of the confusion were not mentioned either on the ATIS or on the WX briefing message.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TXWY EXCURSION.
Narrative: FOLLOWING THE LNDG ON RWY 28L AT SFO, THE TWR CTLR CLRED OUR ACFT TO EXIT L AT INTXN 'KILO.' WE WERE STILL AT 110 KTS INDICATED AIRSPD WHEN THE CLRNC WAS ISSUED. THE CAPT WAS FLYING (LNDG), AND DECELERATING THE AIRPLANE THROUGH 80 KTS INDICATED. WHEN WE WERE APCHING INTXN 'DELTA.' LOOKING FORWARD TOWARD INTXN KILO THE CAPT NOTICED BARRICADES THAT APPEARED TO HIM, TO BE AT KILO. CAPT ELECTED TO STOP THE ACFT AND ATTEMPT TO TURN OFF AT DELTA. WE WERE SLIGHTLY PAST DELTA -- WHEN WE SHARPLY STARTED A L TURN OFF THE RWY. AS WE TURNED L WE WERE STILL PARTIALLY ON THE RWY, BUT W OF DELTA. THE AIRPLANE WAS NOW FACING S WITH SEVERAL WHITE TXWY MARKINGS (BATONS) IN FRONT OF THE AIRPLANE. IF WE COULD HAVE CONTINUED A SHARP L TURN WE COULD HAVE RETURNED TO THE RWY SURFACE. THE TWR AT THIS TIME INSTRUCTED US TO CLR THE RWY TO THE R INADVERTENTLY RUN OVER SOME TXWY MARKINGS. THE BARRICADES WHICH CREATED SOME OF THE CONFUSION WERE NOT MENTIONED EITHER ON THE ATIS OR ON THE WX BRIEFING MESSAGE.
