Narrative:
Preparing to do an hour of touch and goes at dupage in the pattern, I called tower when ready for takeoff. I informed tower that I was ready at runway 28 to stay in the pattern. I was cleared for takeoff left traffic for runway 1L. I was instructed to enter a left base for runway 1L and cleared to land. I performed a touch and go on runway 1L. I was informed by tower that I had been cleared to land only. While I had not performed pattern work at dupage for a long time and may have misheard the tower, I feel that when I had called the tower and requested to stay in the pattern, the tower should have made it clrer to an aircraft already airborne that the expected touch and go would not be approved and that a full stop landing was expected. At an airport with high density of training traffic, tower should be very clear whether an aircraft is cleared to land or for a touch and go.

Title: SMA PLT MAKES TOUCH AND GO LNDG WHEN CLRED TO LAND.
Narrative: PREPARING TO DO AN HR OF TOUCH AND GOES AT DUPAGE IN THE PATTERN, I CALLED TWR WHEN READY FOR TKOF. I INFORMED TWR THAT I WAS READY AT RWY 28 TO STAY IN THE PATTERN. I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF L TFC FOR RWY 1L. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO ENTER A L BASE FOR RWY 1L AND CLRED TO LAND. I PERFORMED A TOUCH AND GO ON RWY 1L. I WAS INFORMED BY TWR THAT I HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND ONLY. WHILE I HAD NOT PERFORMED PATTERN WORK AT DUPAGE FOR A LONG TIME AND MAY HAVE MISHEARD THE TWR, I FEEL THAT WHEN I HAD CALLED THE TWR AND REQUESTED TO STAY IN THE PATTERN, THE TWR SHOULD HAVE MADE IT CLRER TO AN ACFT ALREADY AIRBORNE THAT THE EXPECTED TOUCH AND GO WOULD NOT BE APPROVED AND THAT A FULL STOP LNDG WAS EXPECTED. AT AN ARPT WITH HIGH DENSITY OF TRAINING TFC, TWR SHOULD BE VERY CLR WHETHER AN ACFT IS CLRED TO LAND OR FOR A TOUCH AND GO.
