Narrative:
Landed at hayden, co, after performing the VOR DME to runway 10 through a 2000 ft overcast. I brought along a friend, an instrument private pilot, who rode right seat and asked questions and flew a portion of cruise. At hayden we waited for my boss and discussed the IFR departure procedure. I showed him how we needed to be at 11300 ft to depart the VOR and head on course. When we departed I was given 10000 ft. I hand flew the aircraft and answered a question on the narrative departure procedure. I again read the 11300 ft altitude and fixed that in my mind as I blew past 10000 ft. The private pilot in the right seat was a former student and instead of keeping a sterile cockpit I fell into the habit of giving dual. Also, the use of autoplt to fly the aircraft with the pilot acting as a manager of the situation may have helped.

Title: ALT OVERSHOOT, CLB.
Narrative: LANDED AT HAYDEN, CO, AFTER PERFORMING THE VOR DME TO RWY 10 THROUGH A 2000 FT OVCST. I BROUGHT ALONG A FRIEND, AN INST PVT PLT, WHO RODE R SEAT AND ASKED QUESTIONS AND FLEW A PORTION OF CRUISE. AT HAYDEN WE WAITED FOR MY BOSS AND DISCUSSED THE IFR DEP PROC. I SHOWED HIM HOW WE NEEDED TO BE AT 11300 FT TO DEPART THE VOR AND HEAD ON COURSE. WHEN WE DEPARTED I WAS GIVEN 10000 FT. I HAND FLEW THE ACFT AND ANSWERED A QUESTION ON THE NARRATIVE DEP PROC. I AGAIN READ THE 11300 FT ALT AND FIXED THAT IN MY MIND AS I BLEW PAST 10000 FT. THE PVT PLT IN THE R SEAT WAS A FORMER STUDENT AND INSTEAD OF KEEPING A STERILE COCKPIT I FELL INTO THE HABIT OF GIVING DUAL. ALSO, THE USE OF AUTOPLT TO FLY THE ACFT WITH THE PLT ACTING AS A MGR OF THE SIT MAY HAVE HELPED.
