Narrative:
Cleared direct to buffer, entered into FMS but aircraft did not respond to command. While trying to determine reason why aircraft did not respond, aircraft climbed approximately 400 ft above assigned altitude. Autoplt did not engage. Aircraft was immediately hand flown back to assigned altitude of 17000 ft.

Narrative: CLRED DIRECT TO BUFFER, ENTERED INTO FMS BUT ACFT DID NOT RESPOND TO COMMAND. WHILE TRYING TO DETERMINE REASON WHY ACFT DID NOT RESPOND, ACFT CLBED APPROX 400 FT ABOVE ASSIGNED ALT. AUTOPLT DID NOT ENGAGE. ACFT WAS IMMEDIATELY HAND FLOWN BACK TO ASSIGNED ALT OF 17000 FT.
