Narrative:
On descent we were cleared by ord approach control for the ILS 22R at ord. About 10 mi from ridge (FAF) we were told to contact the tower at ridge 128.9 and keep our speed up. Because this was the second leg of an IOE and the first landing for the first officer in the airplane, I was helping him configure the aircraft for the approach and landing. Because of some distrs I never switched to the tower frequency. I turned on the landing lights at 1000 ft AGL and had not contacted the tower. I told them so and the tower said he saw the lights come on and gave the green light cleared us across runway 27R and to ground. Lessons learned include, even though we have in our SOP to say 'cleared to land,' I was so engrossed in the approach I didn't verify that we were in fact not 'cleared to land.' this fits into the category of events that happen because of a chain of events. When we get away from the routine and add a little stress, some important things get missed.

Title: LNDG WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: ON DSCNT WE WERE CLRED BY ORD APCH CTL FOR THE ILS 22R AT ORD. ABOUT 10 MI FROM RIDGE (FAF) WE WERE TOLD TO CONTACT THE TWR AT RIDGE 128.9 AND KEEP OUR SPD UP. BECAUSE THIS WAS THE SECOND LEG OF AN IOE AND THE FIRST LNDG FOR THE FO IN THE AIRPLANE, I WAS HELPING HIM CONFIGURE THE ACFT FOR THE APCH AND LNDG. BECAUSE OF SOME DISTRS I NEVER SWITCHED TO THE TWR FREQ. I TURNED ON THE LNDG LIGHTS AT 1000 FT AGL AND HAD NOT CONTACTED THE TWR. I TOLD THEM SO AND THE TWR SAID HE SAW THE LIGHTS COME ON AND GAVE THE GREEN LIGHT CLRED US ACROSS RWY 27R AND TO GND. LESSONS LEARNED INCLUDE, EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE IN OUR SOP TO SAY 'CLRED TO LAND,' I WAS SO ENGROSSED IN THE APCH I DIDN'T VERIFY THAT WE WERE IN FACT NOT 'CLRED TO LAND.' THIS FITS INTO THE CATEGORY OF EVENTS THAT HAPPEN BECAUSE OF A CHAIN OF EVENTS. WHEN WE GET AWAY FROM THE ROUTINE AND ADD A LITTLE STRESS, SOME IMPORTANT THINGS GET MISSED.
