Narrative:
I advised the captain that we had 1000 ft to go at 9000 ft. At that time I looked down to adjust the heat of the aircraft, after doing so I looked up and saw we were at 12000 ft. The captain saw the altitude at the same time. We started our descent back to 10000 ft and at that time ZMP called us to ask us our altitude. We reported to them 10000 ft (actual 11800 ft). That was the last conversation about it. (Corrective action) -- maintain visual scan.
