Narrative:
As my student and I were practicing an ILS approach to the capital city airport in harrisburg, PA, harrisburg approach handed us over to capital city tower. My student (an ATP prep) made the call at the marker. We did not notice the volume on #2 radio was down. Nor did we notice (hear) tower communicating with us. Approach had given us our missed approach instructions. It was not until we started our missed approach and reported missed approach to the tower that we noticed the volume was down. As we turned up the volume and made the second call. Tower informed us he had been trying to contact us. There was no conflict problem during this occurrence. To correct this problem is just basic radio communications. Establish contact and wait for a response.
