Narrative:
While on my first leg of an IOE training flight (the first flight of IOE) the captain examined my pilot license and realized that it had expired. The temporary license was issued aug/xa/00. I had incorrectly looked at the block after date of issuance which stated 'date designation expires apr/xa/01. That date was actually the designated examiner's expiration date. My license has been examined and checked on numerous occasions during training by both instructors and the FAA (federal observer oral and check ride) and no one caught the expired certificate. This is a 'new' temporary license the FAA is issuing, unlike the old handwritten temporary certificate. I recommend changing the computer program so that the actual expiration date of the certificate (issue date +120 days) is listed on the certificate, or move the location of the designated examiner's expiration to a different location on the license. In my opinion, the new temporary license can confuse pilots.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF A DEHAVILLAND DHC8-200, ON IOE TRAINING FLT, HAD IN HIS POSSESSION AN EXPIRED TEMPORARY AIRMAN'S CERTIFICATE.
Narrative: WHILE ON MY FIRST LEG OF AN IOE TRAINING FLT (THE FIRST FLT OF IOE) THE CAPT EXAMINED MY PLT LICENSE AND REALIZED THAT IT HAD EXPIRED. MY LICENSE HAS BEEN EXAMINED AND CHKED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS DURING TRAINING BY BOTH INSTRUCTORS AND THE FAA (FEDERAL OBSERVER ORAL AND CHK RIDE) AND NO ONE CAUGHT THE EXPIRED CERTIFICATE. IN MY OPINION, THE NEW TEMPORARY LICENSE CAN CONFUSE PLTS.
