Narrative:
Before takeoff from pfn runway 32 tower said there was traffic a few mi northeast of the airport. Tower cleared us for takeoff and told us to maintain runway heading. As we climbed out at around 1500 ft MSL we saw on our own TCASII traffic Y, co-altitude, only a mi or so away, possibly converging (outside IMC). I turned left so as to stop the convergence. I think that the tower erred in its estimation of our separation and we erred in trusting him.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X TCASII TA. NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC, HAD CONFLICT WITH VFR ACFT. SEE AND AVOID CONCEPT. EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN.
Narrative: BEFORE TKOF FROM PFN RWY 32 TWR SAID THERE WAS TFC A FEW MI NE OF THE ARPT. TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF AND TOLD US TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG. AS WE CLBED OUT AT AROUND 1500 FT MSL WE SAW ON OUR OWN TCASII TFC Y, CO-ALT, ONLY A MI OR SO AWAY, POSSIBLY CONVERGING (OUTSIDE IMC). I TURNED L SO AS TO STOP THE CONVERGENCE. I THINK THAT THE TWR ERRED IN ITS ESTIMATION OF OUR SEPARATION AND WE ERRED IN TRUSTING HIM.
