Narrative:

Cleared to cross heatt intersection at 16000 ft. Left FL290 in 'descent' mode of VNAV with a 16000 ft crossing programmed at heatt. We were advised to expect a different runway, so the first officer programmed the new runway in the mcdu while I got the new ATIS. I then sent the 'in-range' report and did the descent checklist. Passing FL240 I noticed we were no longer in VNAV and had 8 miles to heatt. We notified ATC, were reclred and vectored for approach. This is a perfect example of the A320's VNAV flaws, changing a runway drops all manually inserted xings without warning.
