Narrative:
On the qball arrival into stl my first officer was less than 5 degrees off course. ATC claimed we were 6 mi off course. We made a correction, this was not enough for ATC so they gave us a further correction. My first officer was new and spending too much time trying to program the flight management system rather than flying the airplane. I feel we are putting too much concern with using autoplts and not flying the airplane we need to make sure new pilots spend more time with the basics, before being concerned with computers.
