Narrative:
While in cruise at FL190 received ATC instruction to descend and maintain 7000 ft, 10 mi north of huo VOR. At the time we were 25-30 mi from VOR and the autoplt was engaged. Initiated autoplt descent at 3000 FPM to meet crossing restr. Autoplt failed to capture selected altitude and during recovery the aircraft descended approximately 500 ft below assigned altitude. Upon receipt of next frequency the controller indicated that there was not a problem.
