Narrative:
Early morning following reduced rest overnight, ATC tower was ground and local traffic controller, hardly ever any traffic at jln this time of day. Prior to reaching runway 13, tower advised position and hold. I acknowledged and we would need 60 seconds for checks and were ready to go. As we were taxiing onto the runway, clearing checks called and checklist calls were being made. Tower called again with 'cleared onto and hold runway 13.' I thought he said 'cleared to go.' power check was made, lights all came on for recognition, takeoff was normal. On climb out tower said he didn't clear us for takeoff, only position and hold. I should not have allowed ATC to interfere with call of checklist or rushing us onto the runway for departure. Too many conflicts with 'position and hold' clrncs can arise.

Title: TKOF WITHOUT TWR CLRNC.
Narrative: EARLY MORNING FOLLOWING REDUCED REST OVERNIGHT, ATC TWR WAS GND AND LCL TFC CTLR, HARDLY EVER ANY TFC AT JLN THIS TIME OF DAY. PRIOR TO REACHING RWY 13, TWR ADVISED POS AND HOLD. I ACKNOWLEDGED AND WE WOULD NEED 60 SECONDS FOR CHKS AND WERE READY TO GO. AS WE WERE TAXIING ONTO THE RWY, CLRING CHKS CALLED AND CHKLIST CALLS WERE BEING MADE. TWR CALLED AGAIN WITH 'CLRED ONTO AND HOLD RWY 13.' I THOUGHT HE SAID 'CLRED TO GO.' PWR CHK WAS MADE, LIGHTS ALL CAME ON FOR RECOGNITION, TKOF WAS NORMAL. ON CLBOUT TWR SAID HE DIDN'T CLR US FOR TKOF, ONLY POS AND HOLD. I SHOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED ATC TO INTERFERE WITH CALL OF CHKLIST OR RUSHING US ONTO THE RWY FOR DEP. TOO MANY CONFLICTS WITH 'POS AND HOLD' CLRNCS CAN ARISE.
