Narrative:
On pushback from gate at cle, engine overtemped, despite terminating start in accordance with procedures (start lever cutoff approaching limit). Unfortunately, during previous 3 flts, engines had been starting warmer than normal due to (we suspect) a weak APU. This led us to allow it to get warmer than we would in a 'simulator situation.' combined with wind in the tailpipe led to an overtemp. Moral of the story: don't assume from past experience that the egt will peak and leap back, and keep in mind the possibility of 'wind up your tailpipe.' it's a lot cheaper to rearrange the aircraft into the wind than to cancel a flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT EQUIP PROB HOT START.
Narrative: ON PUSHBACK FROM GATE AT CLE, ENG OVERTEMPED, DESPITE TERMINATING START IN ACCORDANCE WITH PROCS (START LEVER CUTOFF APCHING LIMIT). UNFORTUNATELY, DURING PREVIOUS 3 FLTS, ENGS HAD BEEN STARTING WARMER THAN NORMAL DUE TO (WE SUSPECT) A WEAK APU. THIS LED US TO ALLOW IT TO GET WARMER THAN WE WOULD IN A 'SIMULATOR SIT.' COMBINED WITH WIND IN THE TAILPIPE LED TO AN OVERTEMP. MORAL OF THE STORY: DON'T ASSUME FROM PAST EXPERIENCE THAT THE EGT WILL PEAK AND LEAP BACK, AND KEEP IN MIND THE POSSIBILITY OF 'WIND UP YOUR TAILPIPE.' IT'S A LOT CHEAPER TO REARRANGE THE ACFT INTO THE WIND THAN TO CANCEL A FLT.
