Narrative:

Departed ft pierce airport on runway 27. Experienced bad crosswind from the south, therefore anticipated a south landing at vero beach. Reported over the coast for landing. With the ATIS for landing, tower was very busy and called 2 other planes as targets. As WX was very clear I could see no other aircraft and expecting a south runway I thought the tower said runway 19L. Tower asked me to report at the intercoastal and I was already way past that fix and lined up with a south runway. Landed on a runway with no event. Tower said that runway was closed, even though there was no 'X' painted on it. To avoid future problems suggest runway be appropriately marked 'X.' my passenger and I all thought the tower said I was cleared to land using runway #19L, other traffic was #2 on right runway. I noticed tower operator on my departure was taking great and exaggerated pains to speak more clearly than when we were landing.
