Narrative:
Assigned to climb to 6000 ft while looking for VFR traffic at 6500 ft. Captain (PNF) made '1000 ft to go' callout at 5000 ft. I acknowledged, but both pilots were distracted looking outside for traffic. Altitude alerter chimed at 6300 ft and an immediate leveloff and descent to 6000 ft. Maximum altitude reached was just under 6500 ft. Inattn and distraction of looking for traffic may have resulted in a conflict, although nothing was said by ATC. In future, I will complete the task at hand, leveling off in this case, and then assist in traffic search.
