Narrative:
We were cleared to fly an ILS to runway 34 in slc. While on the approach and inside the IAF approach control asked if we would switch to a runway 35 ILS so slc tower could get a departure off runway 34. Due to our position in the approach, I didn't want to retune the ILS, reprogram the FMS, and brief the new approach, I suggested that we continue the runway 34 ILS and circle to land on runway 35. This would involve a side step maneuver and the WX was clearly above my company's (1000 ft ceiling -- 1 mi visibility) and charted minimums. Approach control cleared us as requested and I accepted the approach. When we switched to slc tower we were cleared to continue the runway 34 ILS and land on runway 34. Later, when reviewing the approach I realized the runway 34 ILS circle to land procedure was notamed not authority/authorized. I feel that I could have asked for a side step to runway 35 or waited until we were VFR and then change to runway 35 but best of all refused the request and continued the ILS to runway 34.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TO HELP ATC THE FLC REQUESTED A CIRCLING APCH THAT WAS NOTAMED NOT AUTH, APCH CLRED THE FLC PLAN FOR THE CIRCLE, BUT TWR CLRED THE FLC TO LAND LEGALLY STRAIGHT IN, WHICH THE CREW DID.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO FLY AN ILS TO RWY 34 IN SLC. WHILE ON THE APCH AND INSIDE THE IAF APCH CTL ASKED IF WE WOULD SWITCH TO A RWY 35 ILS SO SLC TWR COULD GET A DEP OFF RWY 34. DUE TO OUR POS IN THE APCH, I DIDN'T WANT TO RETUNE THE ILS, REPROGRAM THE FMS, AND BRIEF THE NEW APCH, I SUGGESTED THAT WE CONTINUE THE RWY 34 ILS AND CIRCLE TO LAND ON RWY 35. THIS WOULD INVOLVE A SIDE STEP MANEUVER AND THE WX WAS CLRLY ABOVE MY COMPANY'S (1000 FT CEILING -- 1 MI VISIBILITY) AND CHARTED MINIMUMS. APCH CTL CLRED US AS REQUESTED AND I ACCEPTED THE APCH. WHEN WE SWITCHED TO SLC TWR WE WERE CLRED TO CONTINUE THE RWY 34 ILS AND LAND ON RWY 34. LATER, WHEN REVIEWING THE APCH I REALIZED THE RWY 34 ILS CIRCLE TO LAND PROC WAS NOTAMED NOT AUTH. I FEEL THAT I COULD HAVE ASKED FOR A SIDE STEP TO RWY 35 OR WAITED UNTIL WE WERE VFR AND THEN CHANGE TO RWY 35 BUT BEST OF ALL REFUSED THE REQUEST AND CONTINUED THE ILS TO RWY 34.
