Narrative:

My flight departed detroit metropolitan for a flight to atlanta. We were given many intermediate altitudes on climb out due to crossing traffic. Upon reaching 26000 ft, the altitude knob of the autoplt was centered but the aircraft kept climbing at a very slow rate. At 26300 ft, I noticed the aircraft was still climbing and told the first officer to descend. Just after I brought this to the attention of the first officer, artc called and said we were 300 ft above altitude and to descend immediately. Air carrier traffic crossed at 27000 ft approximately 1 min after we were level at 26000 ft. I blame this incident on 3 factors, momentary lack of attention, poor instruments and autoplts and fatigue.
