Narrative:
Flight from swf (newburg to atl) cleared as filed newburg departure weird sax bwz...on departure, cleared direct lake henry (lhy) I noticed on FMS map a large left after lhy to sax (FL240 to FL130). Told first officer to verify our route. Nyc said J36 J49 psb hvq. We were caught flat footed and quickly confused. Why? J36 went FL130 to sax and 301 degrees toward J49, (we fixated on J36 and not enough time to find J49). We were trying to again check with center but too much radio chatter. We now were at lhy (about 1.5 mins from start to turn time). I started a slow left turn, at about 180 degrees center called said turn 330 degrees and catch J36 (301 out) no conflict reported. Problems: never told of new route. We were not ready for this big of change. Airway to airway clearance. Minimum time to check new route frequency congestion. First officer had commercial chart out and I was doing FMS and both didn't have time before lake henry VOR (lhy).
