Narrative:

I was off frequency making a call to dtw operations for out/off times (ACARS inoperative) when I heard the altitude alert tone and the aircraft at 10300 ft. The PF was pushing the aircraft back down but reached 10500 ft before arresting climb and returning to 10000 ft. ATC called as we were passing 10200 ft in our return to 10000 ft and we reported such. At the time we were avoiding thunderstorm cells and IMC, no TCASII alert.
