Narrative:
On taxi out at ord we made our first radio call to ord ground metering as (air carrier) flight (xx). At that point we switched over to ord ground control as instructed. On receiving our taxi out instructions, we were called (air carrier) flight (xy) and, due to the radio congestion, we were not able to respond to correct our flight number as (air carrier) (xx). I continued to taxi out and figured I would get the problem resolved when we could get a word in. We could not until we were switched to tower and again ground did not give us a chance to respond on the radio. We were cleared for takeoff, again as (xy) flight. We responded with (air carrier) (xx), assuming this would end the confusion. After takeoff, we were finally able to correct the confusion, I did not know that, at the same time of day there is an (air carrier) flight (xy) scheduled out. I believe that the very high congestion on the frequency prevented us from correcting the call sign confusion sooner.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DURING TAXI OUT AND TKOF AN MDT WAS REFERRED BY ATC WITH THE WRONG CALL SIGN. FLC WERE ABLE TO FINALLY CORRECT ATC AFTER BECOMING AIRBORNE.
Narrative: ON TAXI OUT AT ORD WE MADE OUR FIRST RADIO CALL TO ORD GND METERING AS (ACR) FLT (XX). AT THAT POINT WE SWITCHED OVER TO ORD GND CTL AS INSTRUCTED. ON RECEIVING OUR TAXI OUT INSTRUCTIONS, WE WERE CALLED (ACR) FLT (XY) AND, DUE TO THE RADIO CONGESTION, WE WERE NOT ABLE TO RESPOND TO CORRECT OUR FLT NUMBER AS (ACR) (XX). I CONTINUED TO TAXI OUT AND FIGURED I WOULD GET THE PROB RESOLVED WHEN WE COULD GET A WORD IN. WE COULD NOT UNTIL WE WERE SWITCHED TO TWR AND AGAIN GND DID NOT GIVE US A CHANCE TO RESPOND ON THE RADIO. WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF, AGAIN AS (XY) FLT. WE RESPONDED WITH (ACR) (XX), ASSUMING THIS WOULD END THE CONFUSION. AFTER TKOF, WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO CORRECT THE CONFUSION, I DID NOT KNOW THAT, AT THE SAME TIME OF DAY THERE IS AN (ACR) FLT (XY) SCHEDULED OUT. I BELIEVE THAT THE VERY HIGH CONGESTION ON THE FREQ PREVENTED US FROM CORRECTING THE CALL SIGN CONFUSION SOONER.
