Narrative:
While picking our way between cells using visual and radar we entered a cumulus cloud that did not show on our radar. We encountered severe turbulence and some icing. The speed instantly went from .75 mach cruise to .78 mach with an associated overspd clacker. The aircraft quickly lost about 700 ft with the autoplt engaged. The first officer disengaged the autoplt and returned to assigned altitude. I informed ZKC of the turbulence and altitude loss. Neither the first officer or I had seen anything on our radars to indicate that we would encounter such severe conditions.
