Narrative:
FL390, dark night with little or no moon, radar on maximum sensitivity of normal. Encountered severe turbulence for approximately 10 seconds. St elmo's fire was noticed with white puff of clouds. Flight attendant was injured. 1000 ft plus of altitude was instantly gained. Top of buildup was encountered with no means of identing with radar or visually. Autoplt disconnected and hand flew to correct altitude. Dispatch had paramedic meet airplane at gate, flight attendant was taken to hospital and later released.

Title: INFLT ENCOUNTER -- SEVERE TURB INJURY.
Narrative: FL390, DARK NIGHT WITH LITTLE OR NO MOON, RADAR ON MAX SENSITIVITY OF NORMAL. ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURB FOR APPROX 10 SECONDS. ST ELMO'S FIRE WAS NOTICED WITH WHITE PUFF OF CLOUDS. FLT ATTENDANT WAS INJURED. 1000 FT PLUS OF ALT WAS INSTANTLY GAINED. TOP OF BUILDUP WAS ENCOUNTERED WITH NO MEANS OF IDENTING WITH RADAR OR VISUALLY. AUTOPLT DISCONNECTED AND HAND FLEW TO CORRECT ALT. DISPATCH HAD PARAMEDIC MEET AIRPLANE AT GATE, FLT ATTENDANT WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AND LATER RELEASED.
