Narrative:
Approximately 40 NM, northwest of bwi the #1 engine driven 'a' hydraulic pump 'low pressure' light illuminated. The 'a' system reservoir was indicating 1/4 and slowly decreasing. I declared an emergency with bwi approach and proceeded direct to airport. The emergency equipment was standing by. The approach, landing, rollout, and turn- off was made without incident. Aircraft was set up for evacuate/evacuation if necessary. Tower reported smoke from left main gear which was hydraulic fluid on hot brakes. There was no fire. The passenger were off-loaded to people movers and the aircraft was turned over to maintenance.
