Narrative:

Approximately 40 NM, northwest of bwi the #1 engine driven 'a' hydraulic pump 'low pressure' light illuminated. The 'a' system reservoir was indicating 1/4 and slowly decreasing. I declared an emergency with bwi approach and proceeded direct to airport. The emergency equipment was standing by. The approach, landing, rollout, and turn- off was made without incident. Aircraft was set up for evacuate/evacuation if necessary. Tower reported smoke from left main gear which was hydraulic fluid on hot brakes. There was no fire. The passenger were off-loaded to people movers and the aircraft was turned over to maintenance.

Narrative: APPROX 40 NM, NW OF BWI THE #1 ENG DRIVEN 'A' HYD PUMP 'LOW PRESSURE' LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE 'A' SYS RESERVOIR WAS INDICATING 1/4 AND SLOWLY DECREASING. I DECLARED AN EMER WITH BWI APCH AND PROCEEDED DIRECT TO ARPT. THE EMER EQUIP WAS STANDING BY. THE APCH, LNDG, ROLLOUT, AND TURN- OFF WAS MADE WITHOUT INCIDENT. ACFT WAS SET UP FOR EVAC IF NECESSARY. TWR RPTED SMOKE FROM L MAIN GEAR WHICH WAS HYD FLUID ON HOT BRAKES. THERE WAS NO FIRE. THE PAX WERE OFF-LOADED TO PEOPLE MOVERS AND THE ACFT WAS TURNED OVER TO MAINT.
