Narrative:
Shortly after leaving holding at lgc, we were inbound to atl on the lgc 6 arrival. ZTL cleared us to 11000 ft and the copilot acknowledged the clearance. ATC also switched us to a new center frequency. We checked in on the new frequency as we descended out of 12000 ft. The new controller told us to return to 12000 ft as there was traffic at 11000 ft. We complied, never having descended lower than 11700 ft. Although we had no conflict with the other aircraft, we probably would have if we had descended to 11000 ft. The cause of the problem would have been the first controller giving us 11000 ft when he already had traffic there. There was absolutely no question that the first controller assigned us 11000 ft. Both captain and first officer heard the altitude assignment and we acknowledged it.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MLG WERE CLRED TO DSND AND THEN ADVISED TO RETURN TO PREVIOUS ALT BY ANOTHER ATC FACILITY CTLR INDICATING AN INTERCOORD PROB.
Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING HOLDING AT LGC, WE WERE INBOUND TO ATL ON THE LGC 6 ARR. ZTL CLRED US TO 11000 FT AND THE COPLT ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC. ATC ALSO SWITCHED US TO A NEW CTR FREQ. WE CHKED IN ON THE NEW FREQ AS WE DSNDED OUT OF 12000 FT. THE NEW CTLR TOLD US TO RETURN TO 12000 FT AS THERE WAS TFC AT 11000 FT. WE COMPLIED, NEVER HAVING DSNDED LOWER THAN 11700 FT. ALTHOUGH WE HAD NO CONFLICT WITH THE OTHER ACFT, WE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE IF WE HAD DSNDED TO 11000 FT. THE CAUSE OF THE PROB WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST CTLR GIVING US 11000 FT WHEN HE ALREADY HAD TFC THERE. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION THAT THE FIRST CTLR ASSIGNED US 11000 FT. BOTH CAPT AND FO HEARD THE ALT ASSIGNMENT AND WE ACKNOWLEDGED IT.
